Providence ALS Center is dedicated to treating people affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Emphasis is on treatment, coordinated care, education and early intervention to manage symptoms. It is the only nationally certified ALS center of excellence in Oregon.

Providence ALS Center

Providence ALS Center provides comprehensive care for people with ALS by utilizing a multidisciplinary team of ALS specialists: a neurologist, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, registered nurse, social worker, dietitian, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech/language pathologist, respiratory therapist, augmentative communication specialist, psychologist, clinical research coordinator and hospice liaison. Additional physicians specializing in issues that affect people with ALS may attend the clinic or work collaboratively with the center staff.

The center offers clinic appointments with a "one-stop shopping" approach to complete care. While each patient remains comfortably in one room, specialists take turns examining the patient, answering questions and making recommendations.

After the appointment, staff members compare notes to gain a well-rounded perspective and to develop a truly personalized care plan for each patient. Patients benefit from the convenience of seeing all specialists at one time. This becomes increasingly important as patients lose mobility. This multidisciplinary approach has been proven to improve quality of life and prolong life for people with ALS.

Our Goals

The goals of Providence ALS Center are:

  • Serve as a center for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Coordinate care with primary care physicians
  • Maximize each patient's quality of life by utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach
  • Empower ALS patients and their families to make disease management decisions through information and education
  • Offer therapeutic drug trials and promote ALS research
  • Support patients and families affected by ALS

Providence ALS Center is a unique collaboration between Providence Brain Institute, The Oregon Clinic, and the ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington.
