Mark Yerby, M.D. , MPH

Dr. Mark Yerby has been practicing and teaching neurology for more than 25
years. He has focused extensively on the effects of epilepsy on pregnancy and
how women with epilepsy can achieve safe, healthy pregnancies. He has authored
more than 50 articles and has been published in nearly every major journal in
his field, including Neurology, Epilepsia, Epilepsy Research and Nature.
At Providence Epilepsy Services, Dr. Yerby provides medical care and education to help patients gain and maintain control of their lives, despite their illness. He provides diagnostic services for Providence physicians and their patients. Since joining Providence in 2003, Dr. Yerby has established an inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit. He has also developed a multidisciplinary team to evaluate patients who have challenging cases of epilepsy.
Dr. Yerby holds a medical degree from the University of Vermont Medical School
and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington.
Prior to joining Providence, he held teaching posts in the Departments of
Neurology and Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Public Health at
Oregon Health & Science University and at the University of Washington.
Dr. Yerby served as a health policy advisor to former Senator Mark Hatfield and
on the Health Resources Commission for Oregon. He currently serves on the
professional advisory board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the
Board of Directors for the American Academy of Neurology.
Major accomplishments
- Through his contributions to research, Dr. Yerby has helped define the effects
of antiepileptic drugs on pregnancy and has helped to make pregnancy a viable
option for women with epilepsy.
- Dr. Yerby was named the first Health Policy Fellow of the American Academy of
Neurology, American Neurological Society, and Child Neurology Society.
- Dr. Yerby wrote the language of the Clinical Research Enhancement Act, which
was passed by Congress in 1999 to expand support for clinical research.
Vision for the future

shared goal of maximizing each patient’s functional capacity and quality of life,”
says Dr. Yerby.

Joseleeto Chua, M.D., has joined Gajanan Nilaver, M.D., at Providence Neurology Associates in Milwaukie, Oreg. Dr. Chua completed a neurophysiology/epilepsy fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a fellowship in neuro-AIDS at University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Chua recently moved his practice from Grants Pass, Oreg., to the Milwaukie location. In addition to providing general neurological care, Dr. Chua specializes in epilepsy and neurology conditions in older adults.
Paula Gerber, M.D.

Neurologist and epilepsy specialist Paula Gerber, M.D., joined the neurology division of The Oregon Clinic in August 2008. She recently completed a neurophysiology/epilepsy fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz. Under her leadership, plans are underway to open an inpatient monitored unit for epilepsy diagnostics at Providence Portland Medical Center.
Diana Murray RN, CNS, MS, CNRN

Diana Murray received her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Portland in 2000. She worked as a nurse on the neurovascular unit at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center for almost seven years. In addition to patient care, Diana was a relief charge nurse, preceptor for new graduates and University of Portland students, and participated in several committees. In 2005, she became certified as a neuroscience registered nurse. She was a co-author to “Rapid Implementation of the NIH Stroke Scale on a Neurovascular Unit,” which was published in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (9/06). This topic was presented as a poster at the International Stroke Conference in February 2005. In 2006, Diana completed her master's of science degree at Oregon Health & Sciences University as a clinical nurse specialist in the Adult Health & Illness program, with a focus on neuroscience nursing. She is a member of American Association of Neuroscience Nursing, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the American Epilepsy Society.
As the epilepsy nurse coordinator for Providence Epilepsy Services, Diana coordinates inpatient admissions for the epilepsy monitoring unit, provides patient and nursing education, assists Dr. Yerby in the clinic, and provides outreach programs. Diana also assists the program director in other program development strategies.
