Choosing a Doctor for your Baby

A pediatrician, family practice physician or nurse practitioner can serve as your baby’s primary care provider. The choice is up to you.

Pediatricians are doctors who are specially trained to give general medical care to babies and children, ranging in age from newborn to 18 years.

Family practice physicians are doctors who are specially trained to give general medical care to all family members, ranging in age from newborn through adulthood.

Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have advanced training. Although nurse practitioners work under the supervision of physicians, they are licensed to perform health assessments and to coordinate general medical care.

For a referral to a pediatrician, family practice physician or nurse practitioner, please call the Providence Referral Line at 503-574-6595 or go to our online Provider Directory.
