The Beauty of Letters and Words on Display at Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery

Feb. 5, 2008

WHAT: The Greek translation of calligraphy is “beauty writing.” This aptly describes the exhibit of hand-painted calligraphy by Margaret Hespen on display in the Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery.

WHEN: On display through April 7.

WHERE: Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery
Providence Milwaukie Hospital
10150 SE 32nd Avenue, 2nd Floor
Milwaukie

DETAILS: Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery welcomes an exhibit of calligraphy by Milwaukie artist Margaret Hespen. “I like combining text that is meaningful to me with visual beauty,” says Hespen. “Artful presentation invites consideration of profound ideas.” She starts with a watercolor wash or a suggestion of imagery and then paints the calligraphy over the top.

Hespen studied calligraphy under Bettye Lou Bennett at Portland State University after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Wheaton College in Illinois. She spent 10 years in Morelia, Mexico, teaching art and English at the NOE (New Educational Opportunities) Center for disadvantaged children. She now owns a custom calligraphy business and teaches privately. She also works as a substitute teacher in the North Clackamas School District, and hopes one day to combine her love for teaching and love for art in a classroom of her own.

You can see more of Hespen’s work at www.bellaletra.com.

Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery was created to demonstrate Providence’s commitment to diversity. At its simplest, diversity refers to the ways in which we are all different from each other. “Human or biological diversity” encompasses all the differences we are born with or can’t change, such as our ancestry, race, physical ability, body type, color, sexual orientation, gender and age. “Cultural diversity” refers to the differences in what we’ve learned and the choices we’ve made in life, such as the languages we speak, our religious or political beliefs, our family or cultural traditions, our level of education or income, and our marital status.

The Providence Milwaukie Community Gallery changes quarterly to showcase the diversity in our community through the works of Clackamas County artists. All proceeds from sales go directly to the exhibiting artist. The gallery is curated by the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County.
