Welcome to Children’s Inpatient Care at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
The children’s inpatient unit is designed for children who have uncomplicated medical and surgical illnesses, but who need a brief hospital stay. For example:
- A child with a respiratory illness may need breathing treatments for a day.
- A child may require pain control overnight after minor surgery.
- A dehydrated child may need overnight treatment with intravenous fluids or antibiotics.
A Special Place
Our unit has been designed with children in mind:
- Private rooms and bathrooms with space for parents or other caregivers
- A designated quiet room where family members can relax
- A playroom where kids can be kids
- Illustrations of native Oregon animals on the walls and ceilings
- Windows to bring natural light to every room
- Separate treatment rooms to preserve the child’s room as a “safe” zone
Medical and Nursing Care
Your child’s primary doctor or surgeon may request that one of our hospitalists be involved in your child’s care. The hospitalists focus on caring for hospitalized children. They are in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week to care for routine and urgent medical needs.
A Web page containing links to information and resources for referring physicians is now available. New links and information will be added to this page throughout the year, so referring physicians are encouraged to visit the page periodically.
Our nurses are all specialized in pediatric nursing; some have more than 15 years of experience working with hospitalized children. The nurses’ care and support extend beyond the patient to the entire family.
Complete Team Care
It takes an entire team with pediatric experience to care for children and their families. Our pediatric team includes:
- Radiologists
- Anesthesiologists
- Pharmacists
- Respiratory therapists
- Physical/occupational/speech therapists
- Dietitians
- Lab technicians
- Child Life Specialists (social workers skilled at comforting frightened children, nervous parents and distressed siblings; please call 503-216-2298 for more information)
