Breast Cancer Patient Advocates

The diagnosis of breast cancer can bring about many changes in the lives of patients and their families. Knowing what resources and services are available, and being able to access and utilize them, can be a challenge for anyone facing breast cancer.

The breast cancer patient advocates serve as personal navigators, acting as liaisons to enhance the quality and continuity of care for breast cancer patients. These services are provided free of charge through the Providence Health & Services Regional Cancer Center and include:

Providing consultation to breast cancer patients and their families to assess and determine personal needs and concerns, and providing education on resources available to them. This includes nutritional counselors, physical therapy services, wig or prosthetic information.

Referring breast cancer patients to appropriate resources and professionals within Providence Health & Services and the community to assure patients’ educational and support needs are met, e.g. cancer counselors, peer support and support groups.

Assisting breast cancer patients with accessing appointments and resources within Providence Health & Services and the community, and providing advocacy as needed, e.g. insurance and financial issues.

Maintaining communication with breast cancer patients to check their progress through the course of their experience to help assure their needs are being met.

Providing consultation to physicians and other health-care providers regarding resources and services available to breast cancer patients.
