If you smoke, one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health is to quit smoking. Providence Health & Services supports you in this effort. The resources below can help you stop smoking for good. Stop-Smoking Handbook Whether you are thinking about quitting or are ready to quit, the "Providence Stop-Smoking Handbook" can assist you. Full of useful information, this handbook helps you design your personal plan for quitting. "Freedom from Smoking" program The American Lung Association's "Freedom from Smoking" program is designed to help you stop smoking for good. The key to success may be what you'll learn about how to prevent relapses. As part of the program, a pharmacist will assess your need for nicotine replacement therapy or Zyban. These medications are provided to program participants at no charge. Class size is limited to 18 members. Providence Health Plan members receive a reduced rate on selected classes. Free and Clear This telephone-based program offers an alternative to smokers who want the support of a structured program but who cannot attend a group class. Free and Clear provides 12 months of stop-smoking support, including scheduled telephone calls from a trained counselor, written materials, free nicotine replacement therapy mailed directly to your home, and a toll-free help line. Providence Health Plan members receive a reduced rate. - For more information, call Free and Clear at: 800-292-2336
Drug therapies A number of products, including nicotine-replacement therapy (patches) and buproprion (Zyban), can help highly addicted smokers quit. Talk to your doctor to decide whether either of these pharmacologic options is appropriate for you. Those who take part in the Freedom from Smoking program will be assessed by a trained pharmacist and, if appropriate, will be provided enough free nicotine-replacement patches or Zyban to last them until the next class. Providence Health Plan members can receive a $75 reimbursement for either patches or Zyban if they are also enrolled in Free and Clear or an approved smoking-cessation group class.
