Our residents come to our program with great diversity. They come from all parts of the country and with a broad range of experiences. What they have in common is a commitment to excellence and a desire to make the health care system better. This commonality is palpable throughout the program and is visible in the work of the graduates once they leave the program.
Providence Portland Medical Center is an extraordinary place. Here I’ve found a combination of compassion, educational excellence and collegiality that is truly unique.
I’ve found an Internal Medicine residency program that is led by dedicated clinician-educators who have created a resident-focused environment where academic rigor and fun go hand-in-hand, an environment where residents have the necessary tools both to provide outstanding patient care and to receive a top-notch graduate medical education.
My path to Providence has been rather circuitous. I grew up in Santa Barbara, California and attended Colby College in Maine, graduating with an English literature and Biochemistry degree. After college, I worked as a music therapist for developmentally disabled adults writing behavioral modification songs. After five years, I ultimately pursued medical school and attended The University College Dublin in Ireland. Between medical school rotations, my wife and I took every advantage of exploring Europe while in such close proximity.
When applying to Internal Medicine Residency Programs, I sought a down to earth program with a reputation for academic excellence. I came to Providence because I loved the attitude and interactions that the residents and staff had during my visit, and was impressed by the strength of the curriculum. Providence residents seemed genuinely happier than other residents I had met along the interview trail. The broad, unique, and well rounded backgrounds each of my fellow residents offered was amazing. This diversified background, along with, the evidenced-based academic rigor and the committed, passionate and accessible medical education faculty and subspecialists make for an incredibly fulfilling and strong internal medicine residency program.
The process to discover the right program is lengthy and critical. I’m so happy to have found Providence and am excited to talk to you as you search for the best place for yourself. Please let me know if you have any questions or I can help.
Warm regards,
Christian Powell, M.D.
