Providence Portland: Outpatient Support Staff

Our outpatient support staff focuses all their energy on helping residents deliver high-quality care to their outpatient panel of patients. Residents work with their own medical assistants. This allows residents to provide good continuity of care even when not in the office. The medical assistants help with diabetic education, making sure that cancer screening is done, and assist in returning patient calls. Learning to collaborate with medical assistants is a crucial skill for efficiently practicing medicine. Our clinic also employs RNs and a social worker to optimize the care received by our patients. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team allows residents to learn crucial team management skills.

We feel fortunate to work at the outpatient practice connected to the Internal Medicine Residency. Helping new interns provide high-quality care to their patients is very satisfying. Our team system, where each resident has their own medical assistant, allows us to support continuity of care even when residents are not in the office. We get to know all of them well and feel we provide great care to our patients here in PACE.

“The best part of working with the residents is getting to know them individually. When they start as interns, we have much to teach them about how our practice works. By the time they leave, we are a team working together to improve our patients’ health.” Tamara Kelsey, Lead MA

“My medical assistant starts clinic by reviewing each patient’s diabetic record electronically. She takes care of getting a sample microalbumin and puts out the microfilament for testing sensation. We are a real team and we are improving the care of our diabetic patients.”
Todd Merrick, M.D.
