Breast Screening and Diagnostic Imaging

The Spear Center utilizes the latest technologies, including mammography, ultrasound, MRI and ductography for detection; and stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI guidance for breast biopsies and localizations. In addition to state-of-the-art technology, the experience of our radiology team is a strength of our center. For example, more breast MRI examinations are performed at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center than anywhere else in Oregon. As the busiest site, our radiologists have the experience and exposure to varied cases that is needed to accurately perform and analyze these tests and procedures.

Equipped with numerous mammography, ultrasound and MRI units, the center offers convenient appointment availability. All mammogram results are reviewed a minimum of two times – once by a radiologist, and once by a sophisticated R2 ImageChecker system, which provides a computerized "second opinion" reading.

If a mass is detected, image-guided interventions are available on site to obtain tissue for tissue-specific diagnosis. Core biopsies – a nonsurgical method requiring only small, needle-sized incisions – can be performed on site, using stereotactic, MRI or ultrasound guidance for optimal precision. When a surgical biopsy is required, the center’s imaging professionals work closely with surgeons to perform image-guided breast localizations prior to the surgical procedure.
