Overview
The Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Children and Families connects families, caregivers and friends of children with disabilities to resources, information and training. Families come to the Swindells Center seeking answers to many of the questions that surface in their everyday lives. We offer resources specific to disabilities and conditions, as well as information on respite options, recreation, educational options and other day-to-day issues.

How to Help Your Child Learn Better: Brain Cleaning 101 with Jane Healy, PhD

Jane Healy, PhD will address the many ways parents and families can help children with learning challenges, differences and disabilities learn more effectively*. Dr. Healy will provide practical, scientifically based strategies to help us better prepare our children of all ages to solve problems. Her presentation will address issues such as the impact of sleep, nutrition and eating, routines and daily structure activities. Parents and professionals working with children with any disability will benefit from this presentation.
Jane Healy is a teacher and educational psychologist who has worked with all ages from pre-school to graduate school. Her many years of experience include: parent, classroom teacher, reading/learning specialist, elementary administrator, and clinician. She is recognized internationally as author, lecturer, and consultant. She has received international media coverage, including Nightline, Good Morning America, the Today Show, CNN and NPR, for her ideas about the impact of technology, media and culture on children's brain development
Jane's award-winning books include: Your Child's Growing Mind: A Guide to Learning and Brain Development from Birth to Adolescence; Endangered Minds: Why Children Don't Think and What We Can Do About It , and Failure to Connect: How Computers Affect Our Children's Minds--and What We Can Do About It.
* ADHD/ADD; Autism Spectrum Disorder; Asperger Syndrome; Non Verbal Learning Disorder and many others will be addressed in this presentation.

Training for your Life Care Notebook and Organizer - 2nd Tuesday of every month
Do you have piles of forms for your child that you need to keep -- but don’t know how to organize? Attend a Life Care Notebook training session on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Bring all those papers, and we'll show you an easy way to have it all at your fingertips -- for for the doctor, for school, and for the babysitter! Lending library
The E.L. Wiegand Foundation Library, within the Swindells Resource Center, provides information on a wide range of childhood illnesses and conditions, as well as the care and parenting issues related to them. User-friendly information is available in many forms, including videos, audiotapes, periodicals, books, and staff-assisted computer searches. Topics include:
The Swindells Center staff will research topics relevant to the needs of your child and family.
Community education events
The Swindells Center conducts training programs for families and caregivers of children with disabilities on topics such as behavior and development, communication, future planning, nutrition, education, inclusion strategies and child advocacy. Our presenters include local experts in various medical and educational fields as well as national and internationally known advocates for children and families.
Activities
The Swindells Center works closely with a variety of groups to develop resources and to enhance efforts to help families and communities deal more successfully with the challenges we all face together.

How to use the Swindells Center
All friends, families and caregivers are welcome to visit. We are open Monday through Thursday for drop-in visits from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are also available by appointment on Fridays. In addition, the staff provides support and resources by phone and e-mail.
