Arthur Derse, M.D., J.D., is director of Medical and Legal Affairs, associate director of the Center for the Study of Bioethics and director of the Medical Humanities Program at the Medical
College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He also serves as a professor of bioethics and emergency medicine.
Dr. Derse is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. He currently
is chair of the National Ethics Committee of the Veterans Health Administration, chair of the Ethics Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and senior consultant for Academic Affairs at the American Medical Association’s Institute for Ethics. He contributed to the development of the Education on Palliative and End-of-life Care (EPEC) Project, helped develop its curriculum for emergency physicians, and serves as a member of the EPEC advisory boards
and national faculty.
Dr. Derse’s writings include co-authorship of the Code of Ethics of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Practical Ethics for Students, Interns and Residents: A Short Reference Manual, 3rd Edition.
The Curtis R. Holzgang Visiting Scholar
The Visiting Scholar program was launched in 2001 and is named for Dr. Curtis R. Holzgang to honor his years of service as director of Critical Care Medicine at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
